BIRTHDAYS If your child's birthday
is during the summer, we will be celebrating his/her birthday on their half birthday. Keep this in mind during the school
year.

Reading News:
Each week be looking for a vocabulary sheet that should be coming home.
This is a half sheet of paper and has the vocabulary words on for the week. They get these words at the beginning of the week.
Quizzes over these words are on Friday.
We will be beginning our third theme
of antholoby one after Thanksgiving break. This theme is entitled, "Friends to Grow With". In this them students will observe how people grow and change through relationships with others. They will
gain an understanding of how friends and family can influence them. In this theme we will be focusing on certain skills. Following
directions, multiple-meaning words, prefixes and suffixes, sequencing, along with drawing conclusions are all skills that
will be introduced and practiced.
In third grade we believe reading is a very important skill. It
is often a determining factor in our understanding of other subjects. We use the Harcourt Trophies series for our
Language Arts program. This will be our sixth year using this program. Trophies provides students
with a wealth of opportunities to read a variety of high-quality literature. Among these selections are nonfiction
pieces. Research has shown that reading aloud to children contributes to their motivation, comprehension,
vocabulary, fluency, knowledge base, literary understanding, familiarity with literary terms, and a lifetime love
of literature. Each Wednesday your child should bring home their reading book. This would be an opportunity to help
your child gain a love for reading by reading the story selection for the week together and discussing it.

We are finishing Chapter 12, "Our Nation and the World". There will be a
test over this chapter on November 18th.
If you have misplaced the study guide, please see the social studies study guide link for a new one. This chapter discussed
the government of the Netherlands which we compared to the U.S.A. We also have discussed how nations of the world work together.
We will now be going back to the beginning of the book, where we will focus on the community. The first chapter will help
students recognize that they belong to a variety of communities. We will also be learning about map titles, key, and cardinal
directions. They will use these skills to create a map of their neighborhood.
Planner
This year your child will be using a planner. We feel this will help your child become more responsible for
work. Along with responsibility, we hope the planner will help your child stay organized, set goals, and complete work
on time. In order for these things to be achieved, we need your help. Each day, until your child becomes familiar
with filling out the planner, we will help them. At the end of the day, any homework that is finished will have a check
mark placed by it. If it is not complete it may have a circle around it. Your child's teacher will initial
at the bottom. We ask that you look at the planner and sign it. Check with your child on any unchecked items in
the planner to make sure he/she has completed these.

Scholastic Monthly Book Ordering On-line
Third grade parents you can now order books from our
monthly book orders online. Look for a note that will be coming home the week of September 8th on how to do this. The note
will contain the webpage, class username, and the password needed to order online. You can also click the above link to get
you to the webpage. Keep the note posted somewhere in your house, so you will have the username and password handy if you
choose to order this way. This would be a great way to purchase books for the holidays if needed, because your child would
not necessarily see what you ordered.
