Reading News:
Each week be looking for a vocabulary sheet that should be coming home. This is a half sheet of paper and has the vocabulary words on for the week. They get these words at the beginning of the week. Quizzes over these words are on Friday.

We will be beginning our third theme of antholoby one after Thanksgiving break. This theme is entitled, "Friends to Grow With". In this them students will observe how people grow and change through relationships with others. They will gain an understanding of how friends and family can influence them. In this theme we will be focusing on certain skills. Following directions, multiple-meaning words, prefixes and suffixes, sequencing, along with drawing conclusions are all skills that will be introduced and practiced.

In third grade we believe reading is a very important skill.  It is often a determining factor in our understanding of other subjects.  We use the Harcourt Trophies series for our Language Arts program.  This will be our sixth year using this program.  Trophies provides students with a wealth of opportunities to read a variety of high-quality literature.  Among these selections are nonfiction pieces.
Research has shown that reading aloud to children contributes to their motivation, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, knowledge base, literary understanding, familiarity with literary terms, and a lifetime love of literature. Each Wednesday your child should bring home their reading book. This would be an opportunity to help your child gain a love for reading by reading the story selection for the week together and discussing it.

We are finishing Chapter 12, "Our Nation and the World". There will be a test over this chapter on November 18th. If you have misplaced the study guide, please see the social studies study guide link for a new one. This chapter discussed the government of the Netherlands which we compared to the U.S.A. We also have discussed how nations of the world work together. We will now be going back to the beginning of the book, where we will focus on the community. The first chapter will help students recognize that they belong to a variety of communities. We will also be learning about map titles, key, and cardinal directions. They will use these skills to create a map of their neighborhood.

Planner
This year your child will be using a planner.  We feel this will help your child become more responsible for work.  Along with responsibility, we hope the planner will help your child stay organized, set goals, and complete work on time.  In order for these things to be achieved, we need your help.  Each day, until your child becomes familiar with filling out the planner, we will help them.  At the end of the day, any homework that is finished will have a check mark placed by it.  If it is not complete it may have a circle around it.  Your child's teacher will initial at the bottom.  We ask that you look at the planner and sign it.  Check with your child on any unchecked items in the planner to make sure he/she has completed these.

Scholastic Monthly Book Ordering On-line

Third grade parents you can now order books from our monthly book orders online. Look for a note that will be coming home the week of September 8th on how to do this. The note will contain the webpage, class username, and the password needed to order online. You can also click the above link to get you to the webpage. Keep the note posted somewhere in your house, so you will have the username and password handy if you choose to order this way. This would be a great way to purchase books for the holidays if needed, because your child would not necessarily see what you ordered.

Religion
Your child received a Bible on November 12th at mass. They were very eager to begin to learn how to use the Bible and how to locate information. We will be using the Bible until after Thanksgiving break to become familiar with using it correctly. They will be looking up various Bible verses to locate information to answer questions. After Thanksgiving break we will use the Bible to read the verses that are discussed in our chapter at that time. Right now,we have begun Unit 3, "The Body of Christ". In this unit the students will gain an understanding of the good news Jesus' brought and how we continue to spread the good news. They will learn the meaning of the Paschal mystery and how we celebrate this. We will also discuss sacrifice and the meaning of sacrifice. In the last chapter we will learn how the church does Jesus' work and how we are called to do service for others.

Click on Harcourt Religion above to be connected to their link. You will love this. Do you want a way you can discuss the Sunday readings with your children? Do you want to be able to review what is being discussed in class? Do you want seasonal and prayer ideas? This link can offer all of this and more. After clicking on this link, click on K-8 "Call to Faith" then Parents. The interactive chapter reviews and unit reviews are great for reviewing for a test. The Lectionary link provides the Sunday readings with reflection questions for adults and children. It also provides activities that can be done at home that relate to this reading.

In the third theme of anthology one our focus is on plural possessive nouns, abbreviations, and various types of pronouns. By the end of the anthology students will be able to state examples of these and to use them correctly in sentences..
For writing we will be interviewing a classmate and writing about him/her. With this activity the students will be taking pictures using the digital camera and learning how to use an Appleworks document to type their paper. They will also gain an understanding of what persuasive means. With this knowledge students will complete a persuasive writing paragraph.

Science Beakers

Science
We are now gearing up for the next unit called Structures of Life.  We will begin The Origin of Seeds and Growing.  In this investigation we will explore the properties of fruits and seeds, maintain a seed sprouter and watering schedule, monitor changes in seeds over days, and use the scientific thinking process to conduct investigations.  Then the kids will enjoy meeting the crayfish and bess beetles.  This unit to be an exciting one!  We will create habitats for our crayfish and beetles, maintain a feeding schedule, and  learn about their body structures and way of life!

 Marvelous Math
We have begun to use Rocket Math again to practice multiplication facts. This year they will practice the top one day and complete it with a timing. The following day they will do the same. My hope is that each day they get better at their facts rather than focusing on the goal so much.

We are now working with multiplication facts 0-5 which will be completed before break. It is very important for your child to learn these facts. Repetition is needed to learn facts, so we strongly encourage you to use flash cards at home or to visit our Interactive sites to practice skills link. They need to know their multiplicatin facts before moving on to another concept.

You will find  a number of activities for your child. They can time themselves on basic math facts. You can review any concept they were having difficulty understanding. The computer will even review with them step by step on what to do. They will also discuss vocabulary that is introduced in the chapter being worked on. All you have to do is click on MATHEMATICS, FAMILY, and GRADE 3 to get started.
