BIRTHDAYS
If your child's birthday is during the summer, we will be celebrating his/her birthday on their half birthday. Keep this in mind during the school year.

Reading News:
Each week be looking for a vocabulary sheet that should be coming home. This is a half sheet of paper and has the vocabulary words on for the week. They get these words at the beginning of the week. Quizzes over these words are on Friday.

Our theme to begin the school year is "Something Special". For this theme students will be reading about people and characters who discover their special abilities, talents, and ideas. We hope that these stories help your child appreciate others for who they are and understand that God created everyone in his image but in a unique way. We will discuss this theme for five weeks before moving on. During this time your child will be working on a variety of skills. These skills include: decoding long words, narrative elements, synonyms and antonyms, and dictionary skills.

In third grade we believe reading is a very important skill.  It is often a determining factor in our understanding of other subjects.  We use the Harcourt Trophies series for our Language Arts program.  This will be our sixth year using this program.  Trophies provides students with a wealth of opportunities to read a variety of high-quality literature.  Among these selections are nonfiction pieces.
Research has shown that reading aloud to children contributes to their motivation, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, knowledge base, literary understanding, familiarity with literary terms, and a lifetime love of literature. Each Tuesday your child should bring home their reading book. This would be an opportunity to help your child gain a love for reading by reading the story selection for the week together and discussing it.

With this year being an election year your child will gain an understanding of the "Government in the United States". They will learn about their local, state, and national government. They will become familiar with the leaders for each part of the government. They will also explore what an election is. For this part they will be able to state what an election is and two different types of elections. They will learn different vocabulary that goes with the election process and gain an understanding of what a poll is, what are representatives, and what are some different jobs the different types of government are responsible for.

Planner
This year your child will be using a planner.  We feel this will help your child become more responsible for work.  Along with responsibility, we hope the planner will help your child stay organized, set goals, and complete work on time.  In order for these things to be achieved, we need your help.  Each day, until your child becomes familiar with filling out the planner, we will help them.  At the end of the day, any homework that is finished will have a check mark placed by it.  If it is not complete it may have a circle around it.  Your child's teacher will initial at the bottom.  We ask that you look at the planner and sign it.  Check with your child on any unchecked items in the planner to make sure he/she has completed these.

Religion
This year third grade students are fortunate to be using a new anthology in religion. Newman Catholic Elementary will be using the "Call to Faith" series published by Harcourt. "Call to Faith" uses a proven three step catechetical process. It invites students to reflect on the content covered and relate this to real life experiences. Students explore the Catholic faith throughout the chapter reading scripture and learning how they can grow in faith. Finally, students celebrate through a variety of prayers. Each chapter will allow students an opportunity to share their faith, connect the content of what was read to their life, and help give them ideas of how they can live their faith. We will begin the year off by discussing God's beautiful creation and learning about the Holy Trinity.

In third grade the focus in language arts will be the different types of sentences there are and the various parts of speech. We begin the school year off by discussing what makes a complete sentence. We then move on to discuss statements, commands, exclamations, and questions. After this the students are able to identify subjects and predicates.
In writing we begin the school year by writing descriptive paragraphs. Students will be given various tasks to describe an object or a person. We will spend various amounts of time on writing and go through the process of gaining ideas to write about, revising our ideas we wrote, and editing our papers for mistakes. After these processes students will write a sheet to publish.

Science
This year we continue to use the Foss, Full Option Science System for science exploration.  We will start the year off learning about Ideas and Inventions.  We will conduct many investigations such as rubbing inventions, carbon printing inventions, and mirror images.  It is going to be a great year in science!

 Marvelous Math
In previous years we have used a program called "Rocket Math" to practice our basic facts. This year we will be using flash cards with a partner instead due to the content that is covered in our new mathematics anthology "Progress in Mathematics" by Sadlier-Oxford. If you would have addition and subtraction flash cards at home, we would appreciate it if your child brought these to school. They were not on the supply list, but if you have them available it would help us tremendously. The school year is going to start off with your child demonstrating his/her ability to read and write numbers through 999,999. The third graders will be comparing and ordering whole numbers and money amounts. They will be able to round these numbers also. Part of the chapter is focused on learning a strategy for solving story problems. In this chapter, the focus for solving a problem will be drawing a picture.
