BIRTHDAYS
If your child's birthday is during the summer, we will be celebrating his/her birthday on
their half birthday. Keep this in mind during the school year.

Reading News:
Each week be looking for a vocabulary sheet that should be coming home.
This is a half sheet of paper and has the vocabulary words on for the week. They get these words at the beginning of the week.
Quizzes over these words are on Friday.
Our theme to begin the school year is "Something Special".
For this theme students will be reading about people and characters who discover their special
abilities, talents, and ideas. We hope that these stories help your child appreciate others for who they are and understand
that God created everyone in his image but in a unique way. We will discuss this theme for five weeks before moving on. During
this time your child will be working on a variety of skills. These skills include: decoding long words, narrative elements,
synonyms and antonyms, and dictionary skills.
In third grade we believe reading is a very important skill. It is often a determining factor in our understanding
of other subjects. We use the Harcourt Trophies series for our Language Arts program. This will be our
sixth year using this program. Trophies provides students with a wealth of opportunities to read a variety of high-quality
literature. Among these selections are nonfiction pieces. Research has
shown that reading aloud to children contributes to their motivation, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, knowledge base,
literary understanding, familiarity with literary terms, and a lifetime love of literature. Each Tuesday your child
should bring home their reading book. This would be an opportunity to help your child gain a love for reading by
reading the story selection for the week together and discussing it.

With this year being an election year your child will gain an understanding of the "Government in the United States". They will learn about their local,
state, and national government. They will become familiar with the leaders for each part of the government. They will also
explore what an election is. For this part they will be able to state what an election is and two different types of elections.
They will learn different vocabulary that goes with the election process and gain an understanding of what a poll is, what
are representatives, and what are some different jobs the different types of government are responsible for.
Planner
This year your child will be using a planner. We feel this will help your child become more responsible for
work. Along with responsibility, we hope the planner will help your child stay organized, set goals, and complete work
on time. In order for these things to be achieved, we need your help. Each day, until your child becomes familiar
with filling out the planner, we will help them. At the end of the day, any homework that is finished will have a check
mark placed by it. If it is not complete it may have a circle around it. Your child's teacher will initial
at the bottom. We ask that you look at the planner and sign it. Check with your child on any unchecked items in
the planner to make sure he/she has completed these.
