Reading News:
Each week be looking for a vocabulary sheet that should be coming home. This is a half sheet of paper and has the vocabulary words on for the week. They get these words at the beginning of the week. Quizzes over these words are on Friday.

We have begun the anthology called "Celebrate Our World" . In this anthology students explore the Earth and the Universe. They listen to stories about people and animal characters who enjoy the world around them. The more they see of the world the more they are able to look at the world in a new light.
In third grade we believe reading is a very important skill.  It is often a determining factor in our understanding of other subjects.  We use the Harcourt Trophies series for our Language Arts program.  This will be our sixth year using this program.  Trophies provides students with a wealth of opportunities to read a variety of high-quality literature.  Among these selections are nonfiction pieces.
Research has shown that reading aloud to children contributes to their motivation, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, knowledge base, literary understanding, familiarity with literary terms, and a lifetime love of literature. Each Wednesday your child should bring home their reading book. This would be an opportunity to help your child gain a love for reading by reading the story selection for the week together and discussing it.

We will begin the final chapter for this year in our social studies class at the end of this week. Students will be learning about a "Growing America". In this chapter students gain an understanding of immigration, factories, and the rage of automobiles. They will also learn about measuring distance on a map using a map scale.

Planner
This year your child will be using a planner.  We feel this will help your child become more responsible for work.  Along with responsibility, we hope the planner will help your child stay organized, set goals, and complete work on time.  In order for these things to be achieved, we need your help.  Each day, until your child becomes familiar with filling out the planner, we will help them.  At the end of the day, any homework that is finished will have a check mark placed by it.  If it is not complete it may have a circle around it.  Your child's teacher will initial at the bottom.  We ask that you look at the planner and sign it.  Check with your child on any unchecked items in the planner to make sure he/she has completed these.

Religion
We are just finishing Unit 6 which is on the seven sacraments. There is a test May 5th over this unit. Check the web page for a study guide. We will begin Unit 7. On Thursday. Just like the other units. There are three chapters to this unit. A fact sheet over these chapters will be coming home Monday, May 11th. Prayers for third grade are difficult. Although we have been working on them at school, we need your help at home. Be looking for a prayer sheet to be coming home this week. The "Apostles' Creed", "Confiteor" and the two greatest commandments are the prayers expected to be learned in third grade. This is set according to the Archdioceses  of Dubuque.

Students have finished the unit on various types of verbs and identifying these verbs. The rest of this year they will learn to identify various adverbs and determine the words that make up a contraction. They will learn how to write contractions correctly. Students are working on a powerpoint in writing. This powerpoint goes with the research they have done on an animal of their choice. We will be sharing these in the next few weeks.

Science Beakers

Science
We have started our water unit in science.  This unit will take us up to the end of the year.  So far we have conducted many experiments with cold water, hot water, room temperature water, and ice.  We also made our own thermometers.  We have covered density and sinking and floating items in room temperature water.  We have also covered the water cycle, condensation, evaporation, and water quality.  Our FINAL test will be held Friday, May 29th!  Have a great summer!

 Marvelous Math
We are continuing to practice our basic multiplication and division skills. In order for these to be retained it is important they also practice at home. You can do flash cards, go to our interative links, go to Sadlier-Oxford math, play games with cards to practice facts. Anything that engages your child with these facts will be important, because these skills are essential in fourth grade and without practice, they will be forgotten.

Our next few chapters will be working with graphs, solid figures, measurements, area, permeter, and telling time. Each chapter has a section on problem solving. The concepts of problem solving are continually being reviewed in each chapter.

Sadlier-Oxford Mathematics

Parents here is another great opportunity for helping your child with their learning. Go to the link above called Sadlier-Oxford Mathematics. This goes with our new math series. You will find  a number of activities for your child. They can time themselves on basic math facts. You can review any concept they were having difficulty understanding. The computer will even review with them step by step on what to do. They will also discuss vocabulary that is introduced in the chapter being worked on. All you have to do is click on MATHEMATICS, FAMILY, and GRADE 3 to get started.
